Did you enter the code correctly?

Typos are the most common reason for code errors, and certain characters aren’t accepted: These are A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1, and 5.

Is your code for Xbox?

Many codes look similar and some Xbox games include codes meant to be used at the publisher’s website instead of through Xbox Live. Xbox codes have 25 characters and appear like this:

Was the code already redeemed with a different Microsoft account?

Make sure that you didn’t already redeem the code, possibly under a different gamertag or Microsoft account. If you live in a household where others have access to your codes, check that it wasn’t redeemed by someone else.

Is your account suspended or does it have a balance due?

Codes can’t be activated or used if your Microsoft account is suspended or has a balance due. You must resolve all account suspensions and unpaid balances before you can use the code.

If you receive an error message without an error code when trying to redeem a code, try the following solutions:

Once you are in the Marketplace you will need to go to the 'Redeem Code' page.
To do this click on 'My Account' and a drop down menu should open, from there click 'Redeem Code'!
Once the 'Redeem Code' page loads, enter in your 25 character code, and click redeem.
Here you will be confronted with one of three outcomes.
Outcome 1: If you entered in a Xbox Gold Redemption Code you will immediately see you subscription level change to Gold, good job! You are done and can now return to gaming.
Outcome 2: If you entered in a code for Microsoft Points (either from a card purchased at a store like Gamestop or an instant code from a place like Amazon.) you will immediately see points added to your account, good job! Continue on to the next step to find out what to do with them!
Outcome 3: If you entered in a code for a specific item (Such as a game code purchased from Amazon or Gamestop, or a game add on that you won, or purchased) you will be presented with a conformation page and the option to 'Download to Xbox 360', click it and go to Step 7!
